Zagorje ob Savi becomes the first Slovenian municipality to introduce smart city services using Telekom Slovenije’s central communications station

9. 8. 2019

Telekom Slovenije and the Zagorje ob Savi municipality signed an agreement on setting up a central communications station today.

The station is Telekom Slovenije’s solution for smart cities, which functions as a smart street lamp, while also supporting the capture and analysis of various data sets, allowing for better resource planning and management, for example for public lighting, car parks, utility services, etc. This is the first commercially used NB-IoT-based (Narrowband Internet of Things) smart city solution in Slovenia. The agreement was signed by the Mayor of Zagorje ob Savi Matjaž Švagan and Primož Kučič, Telekom Slovenije’s B2B Sales Director.

Technological advancement also impacts the development of cities, which are becoming smarter and more connected by introducing new technological solutions and the possibilities they bring. A smart city is an urban hub that uses technology to improve the quality of people’s life, better manage its resources (roads, water, traffic) and increase its sustainability. The Municipality of Zagorje of Savi set up the central communications station to achieve this, and to bring smart city services closer to people. The central communications station will capture data that will support better management of public services, as well as provide useful information and serve as a charging station for electric vehicles.
The central communications station is located in front of the outpatient clinic on Cesta zmage, and has been available to people since 9 August.

What is the central communications station?
Telekom Slovenije worked with its technology, development and infrastructure partners in developing the central communications station for smart cities in the form of a street lamp that supports a number of advanced services. The station can keep track of the status of parking spots at a selected location, anonymously count traffic, adjust the lighting to the circumstances in real time, and monitor key air quality indicators. It is also a charging station for electric vehicles, and can be expanded with additional modules for capturing data, depending on the needs of the site. Citizens can use it to check information (e.g. the weather forecast) or fill out a short survey on their satisfaction with the development in their municipality, report a damaged bench or statue, or propose changes and improvements. The solution is connected to the platform for managing and monitoring indices in order to improve the quality of living based on the NB-IoT technology. The technology supports effective mass communication of IoT- connected devices, which is the next milestone in the development of 5G. Telekom Slovenije is the only Slovenian operator to have completely upgraded its network with the NB-IoT technology.
