Telekom Slovenije provides advice to users on how to protect themselves against online fraud before travelling during the summer, use public WiFi networks and mobile internet safely, and protect their devices both at home and while travelling. Summer is a time for holidays, travel and relaxation, but it is also a period when users make even greater use of mobile internet, public WiFi networks, online accommodation booking platforms, mobile wallets and digital services.
As a result, the risks associated with online fraud, phishing messages, unverified links, payment card abuse, and the loss or damage of mobile devices also increase. Telekom Slovenije advises users to also prepare digitally for their holiday: before departure, they should check their roaming options, protect their devices and home network, use public WiFi networks with caution, and pay particular attention to messages requesting them to enter personal or payment information.
Online holiday scams: when an offer is too good to be true
Among the most common summer risks are scams involving online accommodation bookings. During the summer holiday season, fraud involving sophisticated phishing attacks is particularly prevalent, with the fraudsters’ aiming to obtain payment card information. They may use a fake advertisement or compromise the legitimate profile of a holiday accommodation provider, then redirect the user to communicate outside the official platform and request an additional booking confirmation or ask them to re-enter their payment details. Recent warnings indicate that such scams are becoming increasingly targeted. In June 2026, SI-CERT warned about the abuse of booking information in phishing attacks in which attackers are aware of the guest’s name, contact details and accommodation booking information, allowing them to create messages that appear highly credible. In most of the detected cases, the fraudulent messages were distributed via messaging applications, with the aim of obtaining payment card details under the pretext of confirming a booking, making an additional payment or verifying information. Users should be particularly cautious of messages that create a sense of urgency, request immediate payment, direct them to an external website or require the entry of payment details outside the official booking platform. If an offer stands out because of an exceptionally low price, luxury accommodation and a lack of credible reviews, this is a clear indication that the user should check it again, with caution. It is advisable to verify accommodation photographs by carrying out a reverse image search and to compare the address with maps and publicly available information.
Be cautious when making bookings and shopping online
If, after you have made a booking, the accommodation provider redirects you to a messaging service or an external website where you are asked to re-enter your payment card details, this may indicate an attempted fraud. Always verify your booking details directly in the application or on the website of the booking platform provider. You should also be cautious of messages designed to create a sense of urgency, such as those threatening to cancel your booking, block your account, report a failed delivery or request an additional payment. Check the sender, the website address and the content of the message carefully. Telekom Slovenije warns that suspicious links, unusual sender addresses and stories that seem too good to be true are important warning signs.
Stay worry-free while using mobile internet abroad
To help users enjoy worry-free use of mobile internet while travelling, Telekom Slovenije offers favourable international data allowances as add-ons. For Croatia, the HR-internet Plus add-on provides unlimited data for seven days for EUR 5.99. For the Balkan countries, the Balkan internet unlimited monthly add-on is available for EUR 15.99. Both add-ons can easily be activated by SMS or through the Moj Telekom or Moj Mobi applications. To provide additional protection against unexpected charges outside the EU roaming area, users also have access to an automatic safeguard that activates a 1 GB data allowance in selected countries if no other data add-on has been activated in advance.
Protect your data and insure your device
While travelling, a mobile phone often serves as a camera, map, wallet, communication hub and gateway to personal information. It is therefore advisable to protect your device with a screen lock, create backups, exercise caution when lending your device to others and ensure appropriate protection against unforeseen events. The Brezskrbni device insurance is designed to protect devices against unexpected events. The mobile phone insurance plans include a range of cover options, including accidental damage, liquid damage and, with the Premium package, theft, burglary, robbery and pickpocketing.
Be cautious when using public WiFi networks
Public WiFi networks are suitable for basic browsing but are not necessarily appropriate for online banking, making payments or accessing business accounts. To provide users with additional protection, Telekom Slovenije offers the Varen splet (Safe Internet) service, which protects home networks and mobile devices against online threats. The service protects users from malicious websites infected with viruses, detects fraudulent online shops and fake online banking websites, helps prevent device misuse, and supports safer and more responsible internet use for children and older people. The Safe Internet service is available with the option to protect an entire network or an individual mobile device.
Protect your devices from thunderstorms
The summer months in Slovenia bring an increased risk of severe thunderstorms, and lightning strikes can seriously damage modems, television sets and computers, as well as cause permanent data loss. Telekom Slovenije advises users to disconnect all devices from both the power supply and the telecommunications network before a thunderstorm arrives or before leaving for their holiday. To improve the protection of fixed networks, subscribers can use the free Lightning Alert service, which provides timely SMS alerts about the risk of nearby lightning strikes. The service can easily be activated by sending an SMS to 041 145 000. Enter the keyword STRELA, followed by a space and your fixed services username. In addition to SMS notifications, warnings about approaching thunderstorms can also be displayed directly on the television screen.
