Telekom Slovenije's comprehensive network upgrade leads to significant increase in 5G coverage and capacity

Telekom Slovenije’s mobile users increase their data usage by approximately 33% each year. In response, the company carefully and comprehensively modernises and upgrades its network with the latest technologies, laying the foundation for continued development. In 2023, Telekom Slovenije invested over 22 million euros in its mobile network, with investments set to more than double this year.

This approach strengthens its competitive advantage and creates the technological support needed to continue providing secure, reliable, and state-of-the-art telecommunications services in line with the latest trends and user expectations. Alongside upgrades, the company is also expanding coverage and boosting capacity to ensure the best possible user experience.

Almost a third of Telekom Slovenije's users are already connected to the 5G network, and this number is steadily increasing as more mobile phones support 5G technology. Telekom Slovenije operates the biggest mobile network in Slovenia.

As the first operator in Slovenia, Telekom Slovenije upgraded more than 300 base stations with 5G technology in 2020 and 2021, achieving 33% population coverage. With accelerated upgrades in 2023 and 2024, nearly 1,000 of the more than 1,500 base stations will be upgraded; over the past year and a half, Telekom Slovenije has increased the capacity of its entire mobile network by more than 30%, and the 5G network's capacity by threefold. The company’s 4G network covers 98% of the population and continues to be improved. Currently, 5G coverage reaches 65% of the population, with plans to achieve 99% coverage next year.

“We continuously expand, upgrade, and update our network with the latest technologies, optimising frequency spectrum usage and energy consumption. Recently, we have restructured and upgraded the core network, enhanced and optimised the access network, and upgraded the back-end equipment, along with further improving connections to base stations. Our network is fully prepared across all levels for the continued rollout of the most advanced 5G technologies. This makes it possible for us to provide users with even more secure, reliable, and faster mobile internet with a low latency,” emphasised Vesna Prodnik, Member of the Management Board of Telekom Slovenije for Technology.

Due to the exceptional capacity of Telekom Slovenije’s mobile network, users can also access fixed services (internet, television, and fixed telephony) via 4G and 5G technologies.

“Our users rely on our high-performance, reliable network, which is renowned for its excellent coverage and the best user experience. With data transmission increasing annually, further modernisation was essential. Leveraging the latest technology, we can respond in real time to network loads, available capacity, and user demands for high-speed data transmission in both directions – downlink and uplink. The modernisation and expansion of the 5G network have been underway intensively since last year, following the completion of the first phase. We are now in the second phase, the biggest in Telekom Slovenije’s history, where we are intensively upgrading the core, transport, and radio access networks; 5G is now available even in towns with fewer than 1,000 residents, in tourist areas, and along the motorway network. This expansion of 5G coverage is the result of the work of over 200 experts who ensure the superior quality of our network every day. In the final phase, we will enhance coverage with a focus on signal quality, and data transfer speeds will be even higher. We will also completely renovate the core network. This is how we are laying a solid foundation for the continued development of the 5G network, which will continue to meet the growing demands for mobile data transfer and other advanced services in the future," said Matjaž Beričič, Network and Infrastructure Director at Telekom Slovenije.

In planning and upgrading the network, Telekom Slovenije pays special attention to energy efficiency and environmental care. Over the past ten years, mobile data traffic on the network has increased 40-fold, while electricity consumption has risen by just 10%.
