Telekom Slovenije the first to launch a 5G Standalone network, in partnership with Ericsson

Pred 7 dnevi

Telekom Slovenije has successfully completed an extensive modernisation and expansion of its mobile network in cooperation with its technology partner Ericsson, and is the first in Slovenia to launch 5G Standalone (SA) technology. The introduction of 5G Standalone technology strengthens Slovenia’s digital sovereignty by building secure, resilient and future-ready infrastructure based on trusted European technology. This is the third major development step in the 5G rollout, as announced when the first steps of the 5G launch were taken in autumn of 2020.

The transition to 5G SA technology is a key direction for further development and transforms the network into a development platform. With Ericsson’s advanced Cloud Core Exposure Server, Telekom Slovenije is opening the door to innovation. Developers and partners can use standardised interfaces to directly harness the exceptional capabilities of the network to develop new digital solutions. The upgrade to 5G SA technology has also made the entire network more energy-efficient and even more responsive. In addition to extremely low latency (response time), which is essential for real-time applications, and even faster broadband access, the new architecture also provides the highest level of cybersecurity resilience, monitored around the clock by Telekom Slovenije’s Cybersecurity and Resilience Centre, with more than one hundred cybersecurity experts. The strategic transition to 5G SA also introduces the option of network slicing. This advanced feature allows Telekom Slovenije to provide businesses and critical infrastructure with precisely tailored quality and reliability of services in line with their needs. With 5G SA Telekom Slovenije is establishing the technological foundations for business services of the future, which will further accelerate the development of smart cities, industrial automation and the comprehensive digitalisation of the Slovenian economy.

Vesna Prodnik, member of the Management Board of Telekom Slovenije: “The introduction of 5G Standalone marks an important milestone in Slovenia’s digital transformation. Through constructive cooperation with Ericsson, we are establishing a next-generation network that provides advanced capabilities such as network slicing, highly responsive mobile broadband access and a fully virtualised architecture. This investment lays the foundations for innovation in key sectors, from transport, logistics and media to public safety, while also helping us achieve our goal of providing coverage to 99% of the population with a modern 5G network. We are also proud that our commitment to quality has once again been recognised. Telekom Slovenije has received an exceptional five prestigious international Speedtest awards from Ookla, the world-leading company for internet connection testing.”

Aleksandar Todorovski, Director of Ericsson Slovenija: “With the introduction of a comprehensive 5G Standalone network supported by Ericsson, Telekom Slovenije is setting new standards for service quality. The network provides the reliability, low latency and scalability needed to support consumer and business services, including the most critical ones. This places Telekom Slovenije at the forefront of 5G innovation in Europe, allowing it to offer differentiated services and consistently provide an excellent user experience across the country.”

The 5G network supports:
•    the highest-capacity mobile broadband data transmission and network slicing to differentiate network layers that businesses or organisations can lease;
•    next-generation fixed wireless access (FWA): the provision of high-speed broadband access for homes and businesses as a replacement for copper cable access and an alternative to fibre networks;
•    voice services directly over the 5G network (VoNR);
•    increased network capacity and scalability to support growing data transmission needs and future 5G applications.
