Telekom Slovenije, which provides the option to connect to the fiber optic network to more than 345,000 Slovenian households, is testing an advanced technological solution that will bring speeds of up to 10 Gbps to users with fiber optic network symmetrical gigabit connections.
This is an 8-fold increase of uplink transfer speed compared to the data rates supported by the currently most widely available GPON technology.
Having completed the tests in the laboratory environment, Telekom Slovenije’s experts will now launch pilot tests of the new solution in the fiber optic network with a few dozen users in Ljubljana, Celje and Grosuplje. Using gigabit speeds of up to 10 Gbps requires Telekom Slovenije to replace a user’s modem, as well as upgrade network capacities.
Matjaž Beričič, Telekom Slovenije's Management Board member responsible for technology, emphasized that “Telekom Slovenije’s fiber optic network will be even more powerful in the future. New technology will provide even more, including the streaming of videos with a resolution above the currently most popular Full HD format, including 4K, 8K and even 16K. New technology will also support the transfer of virtual and augmented reality, a growing number of connected devices and video monitoring.”
Telekom Slovenije manages the largest access fiber optic network in Slovenia, constantly upgrading it, and setting infrastructure foundations for future telecommunication activities. In 2019 Telekom Slovenije provided connections through its fiber optic infrastructure to more than additional 44,000 households, and the company now provides the option of connecting to the biggest fiber optic network in Slovenia to more than 345,000 households in total.
The epidemic that required remote work and schooling has shown how important the capacity of a home broadband connection is. With increased use of video conferencing, video on demand, gaming and internet access, many users upgraded their connections, as previously sufficient connection speeds were not enough during this period. Telekom Slovenije expects this trend to continue in the future, as the amount of transferred data continues to grow, along with the needs for high-speed data transfer.
