Telekom Slovenije responds to the record growth in cyberattacks by strengthening its role as the leading defender of digital security

1. 10. 2025

Slovenia is seeing a rise in the number of cybersecurity threats. The national cyber security incident response centre, SI-CERT, dealt with 24% more incidents in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. A similar trend has also been confirmed by Telekom Slovenije’s Cybersecurity and Resilience Centre with a 22% growth in security incidents. It is important to emphasise that the number of devices protected against cyber threats is also growing.

A good example of increasing security awareness is the internationally recognised security solution Varen splet (Safe Internet), which, together with the Varen splet poslovni (Safe Internet for Business) service, already protects more than 150,000 Telekom Slovenije users.

Modern attacks have become increasingly sophisticated and personal. They no longer focus solely on systems but, through advanced social engineering methods, target individuals. Among the most frequent scams are fake SMS messages about held-up parcels and fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes, which account for a third of all frauds, and extortion via romance scams. Attacks supported by artificial intelligence (AI) are also becoming particularly dangerous, such as calls using a computer-generated voice of a CEO demanding sensitive data from their employees.

"Cybersecurity threats are no longer a distant danger – they can appear anywhere around us and target anyone. It is important, however, that Telekom Slovenije has established strong defence mechanisms and expert teams that ensure the protection of our ICT infrastructure, as well as those of the companies and organisations that trust us," emphasises Janez Anžič, Director of the Operations and Services Centre at Telekom Slovenije

At the core of its operations is the Cybersecurity and Resilience Centre, where more than 100 top experts ensure the security of systems and users 24/7. Their work is based on international standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 22301, and involves collaboration with leading security authorities like SI-CERT and ENISA. The expertise of the teams is regularly confirmed by independent recognitions. This was recently the case at the INFOSEK 2025 event, where Matjaž Beričič received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dalibor Vuković was named Security Engineer of the Year.

From passive protection to active defence
Because relying on traditional antivirus software, which only works against known threats, is no longer sufficient today, a modern approach requires a shift from passive prevention to proactive detection and immediate response. "Speed makes the difference between an incident and a disaster," adds Rok Peršak, Head of Telekom Slovenije's Cybersecurity and Resilience Centre

Telekom Slovenije has introduced multi-layered defence:
•    The first step is preventing contact with the threat. The services Varen splet for residential users and Varen poslovni splet for businesses act as a shield at the network level. Before any malicious code or a fraudulent website even reaches your device, the system can identify and block it. These solutions now protect more than 150,000 Telekom Slovenije users.
•    Comprehensive portfolio for businesses: Advanced solutions are available for business users, such as advanced detection and response (EDR/XDR) and centralised management in SIEM systems. The portfolio includes proactive risk management, such as system security audits and social engineering tests, and protection of key business pillars, such as advanced email protection.

Security is also a personal responsibility
In addition to the technological solutions offered by Telekom Slovenije, it is also essential that every individual is aware of the dangers and acts responsibly. Experts recommend the following steps for significantly improving your personal digital security:

•    Use strong and unique passwords. Avoid simple and easily guessable passwords, such as "Password123". Instead of individual words, use passphrases that are easier to remember but harder to guess, for example, "DrinkingCoffeeByTheSeaAt07h!" The use of verified password managers is recommended for managing a larger number of unique passwords.
•    Always enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Imagine your password is the key to your flat – if someone steals it, the door to your digital world is open. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is like an additional security lock that requires confirmation on your phone, for example, with a code received via an SMS message, to unlock. This keeps you safe, even if someone steals your password, as they cannot gain entry without your phone. Enable this crucial protection in the security settings of your online accounts.
•    Be extremely careful with fraudulent phishing messages. Before opening any link or attachment, always carefully check the sender's full email address. Never click on suspicious links or open attachments in messages you were not expecting, even if they appear to be sent by a known person or company.
•    Secure your smart home and connected devices. Immediately after installing any new smart device (e.g., camera, thermostat, smart speaker) always change the default, factory-set password.
•    Regularly check for and install all security updates provided by the device manufacturer.

By combining cutting-edge technology, experienced experts, and continuous user awareness campaigns, Telekom Slovenije is strengthening its position as a fundamental element of Slovenia's digital security.
