Telekom Slovenije preparing for the future of massive Internet of Things with an upgraded network

15. 4. 2025

As part of the extensive modernisation of the entire mobile network, Telekom Slovenije is reaffirming its commitment to the development of the Internet of Things (IoT). With the upgrade of the radio equipment, LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies are available throughout the network with increased capabilities. Since 2019, Telekom Slovenije has been opening up new opportunities for businesses to utilise advanced solutions in the field of massive Internet of Things (mIoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, while also laying the foundations for the future growth of these technologies.

Connectivity needs in the world of the massive Internet of Things (mIoT) are highly diverse. While the most demanding applications, such as real-time video surveillance or support for autonomous vehicles, require high data speeds and immediate responsiveness of 4G and 5G networks, the vast majority of devices – especially in the massive Internet of Things (Massive IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) segments – operate differently. These are devices that are often installed at difficult to access locations (basements, shafts, remote places), run on batteries, and send only small amounts of data at longer time intervals. Consequently, high data speeds and a constant connection are not essential for them, but rather energy efficiency for long battery life, operational reliability, and good network coverage even under demanding conditions.

"We have been supporting both key technologies, NB-IoT and LTE-M, for a good five years. In the 2019-2020 period, we primarily tested them together with our partners, and recently, also as part of the comprehensive network renovation, we have strengthened development and commercial activities," emphasizes Matjaž Beričič, Director of Network and Infrastructure at Telekom Slovenije. "We are aware that some technologies need time for the entire ecosystem of devices, networks, and applications to mature. We expect that the period up to 2030 will bring a true emergence of massive IoT solutions, and we are fully prepared for this. We are informing our partners that NB-IoT and LTE-M are reliable, secure, and modern solutions that will be the central IoT technologies for at least the next ten years. At the same time, we are also testing new technologies at Telekom Slovenije, such as 5G RedCap, which promises to bridge the gap between existing solutions and the full capabilities of 5G for medium-demanding IoT applications."

Specialised solutions for energy-efficient IoT devices: NB-IoT and LTE-M
NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies were specifically developed to address the unique needs of massive Internet of Things and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, and Telekom Slovenije now supports them on its upgraded infrastructure throughout its entire network. The key advantages of both technologies are:
•    Improved coverage: The signal reliably reaches even hard-to-access locations such as basements, shafts or remote sites.
•    Extremely long battery life: Devices can operate for several years on a single battery.
•    Lower maintenance costs: Longer battery autonomy means fewer on-site visits for replacements, which reduces costs.
•    Massive connectivity: They support simultaneous and reliable connections for a huge number of devices in the same area.

Telekom Slovenije has been successfully offering NB-IoT technology since 2019. It is the perfect choice for devices where the priorities are the longest possible battery life (up to 10 years) and excellent signal coverage, even deep inside buildings or underground. Due to lower transmission speeds (typically up to 160 kbps), it is particularly suitable for static devices that send small amounts of data at longer intervals, such as smart meters for water, gas, or electricity.

LTE-M technology complements NB-IoT where the requirements are slightly different. In addition to low energy consumption, it also offers support for device mobility (e.g., in tracking), somewhat higher transmission speeds (up to 1 Mbps), shorter response times for event-based communication, and even the option of voice transmission (VoLTE). Therefore, LTE-M is an excellent solution for logistics, wearables, alarm systems, and other applications that require greater flexibility or faster responsiveness.
