Telekom Slovenije, which manages the biggest and most modern fibre optics network in Slovenia available to more than 350,000 households, has been gradually increasing basic internet speeds on the fibre optics network.
Telekom Slovenije has been increasing base internet speeds on its FTTH fibre optics and on the open broadband networks to 100 Mbps downlink free of charge. Telekom Slovenije has noticed that not only downlink, but also uplink speeds are important for remote school and work, so it will also be raising base internet speeds to 100 Mbps uplink in its NEO C, NEO Svet C and NEO SuperNet subscription plans free of charge.
Subscribers to Telekom Slovenije’s fixed subscription plans now enjoy a higher average data transfer speed than at the beginning of the year, with a noted migration to fibre optics technology. Telekom Slovenije has recorded the highest subscriber growth to plans with downlink speeds of 300 Mbps, 350 Mbps and 600 Mbps.
Fibre optics network also in more remote and sparsely populated settlements
Telekom Slovenije has been constantly expanding and upgrading its network with new technologies, as only a cutting-edge infrastructure is able to provide users with the latest telecommunication services. The high-performance network provides high-speed internet access to households and businesses across Slovenia, while giving local operators who also use its network the chance to provide high-quality connections at locations where they have no infrastructure of their own.
In line with this Telekom Slovenije has been actively building the network also in areas where there was no market interest (so-called white spots), or where there was a market interest, but no network has yet been built. This allows Telekom Slovenije to provide internet access and communication services also in more remote and sparsely populated areas. In 2016 and 2019 Telekom Slovenije participated in two calls of the Ministry of Public Administration for the construction of broadband networks, and undertook to build new connections within three years of signing the agreement. Telekom Slovenije fulfilled its obligations from 2016 within the deadline, thereby making it possible for 44,718 households in 118 municipalities across the country to connect to a broadband network, and has already fulfilled nearly half of its obligations from the second call.
Reliable operation with exceptionally increased loads
With mass remote school and work, advanced interactive and multimedia services have come to the forefront, and with them also the needs for increasingly faster connections. In spite of exceptionally increased loads in this second wave of the epidemic, Telekom Slovenije’s network has been operating without any interruptions, just as it did in the first wave. Telekom Slovenije has adjusted the work of its experts so that even in these extraordinary circumstances they are able to ensure round-the-clock reliable and secure communication services needed for uninterrupted remote school and work processes. They have also been providing technical support to users, and ensuring increased capacities and additional services required by public institutions and businesses, as well as cyber security, which is exceptionally important in these circumstances.
Hybrid internet access
Where a fibre optics network is not yet available, and users are connecting to the internet over copper lines, Telekom Slovenije recommends that those who want even faster speeds opt for the Hybrid internet access service, which is available as an add-on. Hybrid access is an extra service available to users of fixed subscription plans in areas where the current copper network does not yet support high transfer speeds, but where LTE/4G mobile coverage is available, providing speeds of 50/10 Mbps.
