Telekom Slovenije Fully Upgrades Its Mobile Network with Narrowband-IoT Technology

10. 4. 2019

Telekom Slovenije has fully upgraded its mobile network – assessed as the best in Slovenia by German experts in an independent test – with the NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) technology. This is a standardized technology for efficient mass communication of IoT-connected devices that generate low levels of data traffic.

NB-IoT technology opens new opportunities for developing innovative solutions with a high added value for process optimization, resource management, ensuring high levels of security as well as a higher quality of living. This is also a milestone in the development of the fifth generation mobile networks (5G).

NB-IoT technology supports both simple and complex Internet of Things solutions, from connecting individual sensors to the development of smart cities and communities, providing the data for managing power, water and gas grids, environmental monitoring, safety and security, logistics and transport solutions, manufacturing, farming, sales and financial, healthcare and utility services. Telekom Slovenije is already conducting the first projects that utilize IoT in smart cities, e-mobility and e-healthcare solutions.

“The NB-IoT technology uses existing network infrastructure to provide excellent coverage and reliable connectivity, and is opening numerous opportunities for developers, businesses, organizations and public institutions. The added value of the Internet of Things is in improved information that provides for greater transparency, optimization, easier decision-making, and the ability to develop new solutions. Another advantage is the formation of comprehensive ecosystems that introduce changes across all the levels of our work and living,” says mag. Igor Bohorč, the director of Telekom Slovenije’s B2B Strategic Unit on the introduction of the Internet of Things solutions.

The development of infrastructure and the Internet of Things solutions is in line with Telekom Slovenije’s development strategy, as the company has for years gradually been upgrading its network, readying it for the introduction of the fifth generation of mobile networks (5G). Telekom Slovenije provides LTE/4G coverage to 98% of the population, while its LTE-Advanced (4G+) network covers more than 68% of the population. An increasing number of Telekom Slovenije’s users is following suit, switching to the latest technologies that provide better connectivity and higher data rates, while business customers can also conclude a Service Level Agreement (SLA) and a cyber security agreement.
