6. 6. 2019

Telekom Slovenije and Sparkle, the leading Italian provider of international communication services and one of the top 10 global operators, established a new international fiber optics connection that directly links Ljubljana and Milan.

This new connection, based on Telekom Slovenije and Sparkle’s backbone network, brings a new and short alternative connection between the Balkans and Milan and other major hubs in Western Europe, with access from Ljubljana, Sofia and Istanbul. The link covers the needs of the carriers that operate in the Balkans and the Middle East, as well as international providers of telecommunications services and content that require a reliable and responsive international network.

Telekom Slovenije manages one of the most complex backbone networks in South-Eastern Europe.

Simon Furlan, the Director of the Wholesale Strategic Business Unit at Telekom Slovenije, commented on this announcement: “We have been working closely with Sparkle in the wholesale market for a while now. Our latest joint project, which connects Sofia and Milan via Ljubljana, represents a new level of collaboration. Together we created a new bridge between the east and the west, both for our existing and future customers.”

“We are proud to be working with Telekom Slovenije on this unique land route, which leads from Turkey through the Balkans and to key Western-European ecosystems,” said Mario Di Mauro, the CEO of Sparkle, adding that: “Today, the Balkan region is an interesting market for international cable connections, so we can expect this new route to attract providers operating in the Balkans and Middle East who require a fast and reliable connection to Europe.”

Sparkle, a member of the TIM Group, is the leading Italian provider of international solutions, and is also in the top 10 providers of international links globally. Its backbone network comprises about 530,000 kilometres of fiber optics, reaching from Europe to Africa, the Americas and Asia.
