Telekom Slovenije has set up an advanced IoT platform as part of the VARCITIES project of the Novo mesto municipality, integrating it with environmental sensors to provide decision-makers with a comprehensive insight into all the conditions.

Telekom Slovenije already provides an established set of IoT solutions for municipalities and their inhabitants with the aim of providing sustainable living and a higher quality of life. This allows local communities to support lowering their emissions, to improve their energy efficiency, provide smart lighting, mobility, traffic and parking management, monitor environmental parameters, such as air quality, temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, noise levels, water levels of rivers and much more.

Peter Geršič, the head of the Development project office at the Novo mesto municipality and the project manager of the VARCITIES project, emphasised that “this IoT platform is a major milestone for the VARCITIES project, a pilot project in which Novo mesto is part of a consortium of seven European towns and cities that aims to explore the confluence of natural and digital solutions for improving the health of its inhabitants. This platform will provide a central hub for collecting and managing the data from different internet-of-things devices that address highly diverse issues from mobility, to air quality and people’s movements. With such a technical solution, a reliable and competent partner is essential, as the project is highly complex and requires a lot of input and coordination.

The platform is designed to provide the highest level of adaptability and the option to integrate both, the terminal devices – namely sensors, meters, cameras and displays, as well as other platforms that manage terminal devices in order to implement various IoT verticals and solutions,” explained Kristijan Melinc, the head of Digital Infrastructure at Telekom Slovenije.

Telekom Slovenije provides a comprehensive system for implementing smart city services by supplying end-to-end turnkey solutions or by upgrading existing ones. In Slovenia it has provided support to smart city solutions in seven towns and cities.

The solution also includes the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, and, if required, also an integration with urban mobility solutions, such as bicycles, e-scooters, public transportation, etc. All of these services will be available to representatives of the local community, and by agreement also to all inhabitants through online or mobile apps and smart info points. The solution can also be tailored for tourists, as it supports several languages and integrated signage.

As all towns are different and their requirements diverse, Telekom Slovenije fully customizes the solution to the customer’s needs, with everything from an end-to-end turnkey solution, to integration with existing systems. Telekom Slovenije’s experts can ensure that existing solutions remain operational, while connected to the advanced smart city platform, and adding new features. After establishing the smart city solution they can also provide comprehensive system maintenance and future upgrades.
