Making Sure Children Are Safe Online

17. 6. 2019

Before the start of school vacation, when parents generally give their children more freedom when using mobile devices as well as watching TV, Telekom Slovenije has designed a range of activities to teach both parents and young people about safe and responsible use of devices and especially the internet.

The use of mobile internet, various apps and social networks is still on the rise, with children taking to modern technologies intuitively, and often much faster than their parents.

In a bid to improve their safety, Telekom Slovenije recommends children and parents to install the Kaspersky Safe Kids mobile app on their child’s first mobile phone. This utility app gradually introduces responsible mobile phone use to a child, while also ensuring safe internet use. It is effective and recognized as one of the best solutions for protecting children from online dangers.
The Kaspersky Safe Kids mobile app allows parents to monitor their child’s online activities, set an age limit for certain content, set a time limit for mobile phone use, as well as block all adult content and gambling. The app also provides the option to locate the device, sends notifications when the device battery is nearly empty, giving parents enough time to talk to their child about when and how they will be available. Another advantage of the app is that parents can set the limits they find important, and also change them from their own mobile device. The notifications that parents receive through the app make it possible to have a discussion about do’s and don’ts at the right time. New subscribers can get the Kaspersky Security Plan free of charge for 2 months for the whole family.

Telekom Slovenije has selected a few mobile phones suitable for children, and recommends the LG K40, Nokia 2.1, Huawei Y6 and the Samsung A20e, while the Naj A plan is available from €9.90 per month with the Otrok (Child) benefit. It is recommended that parents and children or teens sign the My First Mobile Contract that sets the rules for using the mobile phone. My First Mobile Contract is a project that the Logout organization developed together with Telekom Slovenije, which also includes guidelines and recommendations for parents about when and in how to allow a child to use a mobile phone.

To have children watch TV without any worries, Telekom Slovenije recommends the parents to use the Otroški park (Children’s Playground) option on NEO, the new platform for watching TV and other content. Children’s Playground allows parents to only permit their child to watch the content appropriate for their age:
- for 2 to 4 years old children
- for 4 to 6 years old children
- for 6 to 8 years old children
- for 8 to 12 years old children
- for teenagers

The youngest ones will get to watch all of their favourite cartoons, while older children can also watch films and other content.

Between 17 and 24 June, parents and children are also welcome to stop by Telekom Sales Centres for any advice about safe use of mobile devices and the internet, and for tips on helping children enter the digital world.
