Cybersecurity trends: how to stay safe in the digital age
Cybersecurity has become essential in today’s digitalised world, both for individuals and for businesses. Threats are constantly evolving, making awareness of current trends and appropriate action crucial. Cybersecurity experts at Telekom Slovenije have recently observed a rise in attacks where threat actors exploit trusted development tools to spread malicious software. This trend is linked to increasing reliance on open-source software and third-party libraries, opening new avenues of attack. Ransomware remains one of the most critical threats, particularly in corporate environments, with attackers increasingly using “double extortion” tactics by threatening to publish data in addition to encrypting it. Traditional scams such as phishing emails impersonating banks, tax authorities or delivery services remain widespread. A newer trend is the misuse of artificial intelligence, known as “AI jailbreak”, where attackers use carefully crafted prompts to extract sensitive information from AI tools – a growing cybersecurity risk.
How to protect yourself
For general users, following basic security practices is key:
• Be cautious with emails and messages: Do not open suspicious attachments or links, even if they appear to come from trusted institutions. Check the sender’s address and watch for language errors.
• Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication: Use a different, complex password for each service. Where possible, add two-factor authentication and consider password managers.
• Keep software up to date: Updates often include security patches for operating systems and apps.
• Create regular backups of important data.
• Be careful when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks: Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for accessing sensitive information, as traffic on such networks can be intercepted. Use a mobile hotspot instead.
• Be cautious with QR codes and unknown software: Do not scan QR codes from unknown sources in public places. Also do not download pirated software, as it often includes malicious code.
Keeping up with current cyber threats and adherence to basic security measures can significantly improve your safety in the digital world. Telekom Slovenije also recommends using the simple yet effective Varen splet (Secure Internet) solution, which can protect your home network as well as your mobile device. For companies and sole proprietors, the solution Varen poslovni splet (Secure Business Internet) is available, safeguarding employees and systems and preventing connections to malicious websites. In addition, Telekom Slovenije provides advanced security solutions that are becoming increasingly popular among companies and organisations.
Beware, lightning! Protect your devices and order the free Lightning alert service
Thunderstorms increase the risk of lightning strikes, which most often (in 42% of cases) damage communication devices such as modems, TV communicators and computers. Slovenia records around 60,000 lightning strikes per year, most frequently in the north-west of the country. Telekom Slovenije recommends disconnecting devices from power and communication networks before storms or extended absences. This helps avoid costs and issues with services, while also protects the environment. For additional safety, users can subscribe to the free Lightning alert service, which sends SMS alerts about nearby lightning danger and displays warnings on Telekom Slovenije TV screens. Activating Lightning alert: Send an SMS to 041 145 000 with the keyword STRELA, followed by a space and your fixed user name (e.g. STRELA novakj). You can find your username in the Moj Telekom portal or on your invoice. If lightning damages equipment provided by Telekom Slovenije, report it by calling 041 700 700, by emailing tehnicna.pomoc@telekom.si, via Moj Telekom, or through the digital assistant Maks.
