15 Years Ago, Slovenia Was among the First in Europe to Get IP TV; to Celebrate the Anniversary, Telekom Slovenije Announces New Services to Bring TV Viewing to a New Level

19. 9. 2018

Today, the 19th September, it is exactly 15 years since Telekom Slovenije (back then through its SiOL subsidiary) became one of the first ISPs in Europe to bring its users the option of watching TV channels over the ADSL broadband connection.

To celebrate this anniversary, Telekom Slovenije is announcing that it will shortly introduce new services that will usher in a completely new TV experience.

“15 years ago Telekom Slovenije was the first in the market to give its users the option of watching TV over a broadband connection, and then we continued constantly upgrading the platform and the TV experience, including the introduction of the TViN service in 2012 that allows users to watch TV on any screen. It is time to take the next step, and we will introduce a completely new TV experience to Slovenian users, one that fully integrates entertainment, content and smart home on various screens and devices. And what’s more – it will all be the result of our in-house development – just like 15 years ago. The beta version is undergoing rigorous testing with users in different segments, and the feedback has been inspiring. When the service is ready for launch, we will of course present it in detail,” announced Samo Ošina, the Director of the Strategic Business Unit B2C at Telekom Slovenije.

15 years ago IP TV was first made available to subscribers in the greater Ljubljana area, and in the coming months also in Maribor and other major towns and cities. The service launched with 110 TV channels taking up the bandwidth of 4 Mbps, and Telekom Slovenije was also the first operator to introduce set-top boxes. Watching TV over ADSL was a completely new platform at the time, only available from 3 other European operators in select cities, and Telekom Slovenije holds an international patent for the service. In the first 3 months, Telekom Slovenije won over 1080 subscribers to the new service, with a significant part of them still remaining its satisfied users.

During these 15 years, IP TV has seen an intensive expansion, and with a 51.4% market share, Telekom Slovenije is still the market leader. Today IP TV comes in bundles with other (mobile and fixed) services, with internal access speeds of up to 1 Gbps, and subscribers can choose from over 300 TV channels and apps in various channel bundles and options.
