In the event of future natural or other disasters that can affect network operations, Telekom Slovenije will be able to use its own mobile unit to swiftly restore mobile services to users in affected areas, as experts from Telekom Slovenije have activated the first mobile intervention unit.
Telekom Slovenije’s mobile intervention unit is a complete technological system that includes everything necessary for establishing public mobile and WiFi networks during emergencies. The system has its own battery and generator power supply and a robust connection to Telekom Slovenije’s backbone network, which can also be facilitated via satellites. Users then connect to the mobile and WiFi networks through transceiver stations, which are integral parts of the mobile intervention unit.
The complete autonomy of the mobile intervention unit means that all the equipment is prepared in a large suitcase, ready to be delivered by Telekom Slovenije to the affected area using a specially equipped off-road van. If road connections are unavailable, the equipment can also be delivered by helicopter. Since the equipment is already prepared for operation, it can be activated on-site in a very short time.
Telekom Slovenije is aware that the ability to communicate during emergencies is crucial for the protection and rescue of lives and property. With the mobile intervention unit, users in affected areas will be able to communicate with others, facilitating the coordination of civil protection, firefighters, and other infrastructure services.
"During the floods of August 2023, the affected areas mainly experienced disruptions in mobile communications due to prolonged power outages. In Telekom Slovenije’s network we addressed the situation on the ground with generators, ensuring the operation of base stations and the mobile network. The fixed network was directly damaged in some places, requiring temporary and permanent reconstruction, particularly of the cable network. We want to be better prepared for any such exceptional circumstances in the future, which is why we have developed an additional solution for quickly establishing an emergency mobile and wireless network in the affected area, if that proves necessary, while also hoping that such interventions will be not be needed frequently," emphasized mag. Matjaž Beričič, Network and Infrastructure Director at Telekom Slovenije.
During last year's floods that hit Slovenia, Telekom Slovenije’s network was the only network in Slovenia that operated without interruption for the three most challenging days. During this period, Telekom Slovenije provided communication to users of all operators in the country through national roaming on its network at the request of other operators.
