To support the FIS Ski Flying World Championships, which is taking place at Planica between 10 and 13 December, Telekom Slovenije established fibre optics connections with speeds of up to 10 Gbps, and provided 5G mobile network coverage with speeds of up to 450 Mbps downlink and up to 100 Mbps uplink.

Competitions at Planica are taking place without any audience at the location for the first time, so fast and reliable communications that will bring the action from the Planica valley to viewers across the globe are even more important.

The Planica Nordic ski centre is fully equipped with a high-capacity fibre optics network, and to make sure that the World Championship runs completely smoothly, Telekom Slovenije further upgraded it for organisers and the media with high-speed internet access over IPv4 or IPv6. At the same time, Planica got 5G network coverage, which will provide fast and reliable mobile data transfer to numerous fans in the future. The 5G base station supports remote activation of additional capacities.

Gigabit fibre optics connections are especially needed for television broadcasts and providing an uninterrupted connection at the press centre and in the landing zone for the reporters at the ski jump, as all the interviews will be taking place over video apps. The German media corporation ZDF will broadcast the championship to its viewers over the fibre optic network with speeds of up to 10 Gbps, and their devices at Planica are connected with their control centre in Germany, where they manage all the content. Fibre optics connections for broadcasting the content from the report vehicle in Planica to the TV studio in Ljubljana are also used by TV Slovenija.

“The organization of the games is even more demanding than in the past, as fans of sky flying are not able to attend the event, and everything is now on TV, radio and mobile devices. A lot of people use a combination of watching the event on live TV, while also using data transfer over mobile devices, so reliable connections are of key importance. We are glad that we once again managed to provide the highest level of communications in collaboration with our traditional partner Telekom Slovenije,” said Jelko Gros, the Chief of competition at Planica.
